The Fredendall building is one of Janesville’s most recognizable pieces of architectural heritage and is listed in both the National and State Registry of Historic Places. Designed by architect George F. Schultze and built for merchants Hiram Baker and John Fredendall in 1868, its Italianate cream brick facade, distinctive hoodmoldings, and deep corbeled cornice have endured for more than 150 years. The building's rich history includes the residency of a truly pioneering woman, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, the first American female music publisher who wrote and composed the iconic song “I Love You Truly”. 

The next chapter started, fittingly, over a beer, in 2024. Inspired by community efforts and progress to revitalize downtown, Janesville natives Bill and Charlie Johnson were in town exploring investment opportunities. Between meetings, they called an old family friend who joined them and suggested, “You should look at my Mom’s building.” They put down their beers, walked across the street, and immediately saw the potential.

Later that year, the Johnsons purchased the Fredendall building in partnership with their sister and designer, Jenny. Together with the City of Janesville, Studio GWA, Paulson-Kimball Construction, and a talented team of local partners, they set out to give the building a new life while respecting its rich history. 

More than two years later, the second and third floors have been transformed into ten unique and thoughtfully designed apartments. The renovation involved essentially rebuilding the interior while preserving the historic brick and stone structure, incorporating new custom windows, modern systems, and finishing each apartment with high-quality materials and fixtures. 

The Fredendall building is once again in the center of a vibrant downtown and home to a new generation of residents.
